AEO

AEO is answer engine optimisation: writing pages so a machine can lift a direct answer out of them and show it to somebody who never opens your site.

Also called answer engine optimisation, answer engine optimization

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. An answer engine is anything that replies to a question with an answer instead of a list of links, which now includes featured snippets, the People also ask box, voice assistants and the AI summaries at the top of many results pages. AEO is the work of writing and structuring your pages so that a machine can lift a correct, self-contained answer out of them and credit you for it.

In short

  • AEO means being the answer, not just being on the page of links.
  • Most of it is old advice with higher stakes: answer first, structure clearly, use real questions as headings.
  • Extractability is the whole game. A machine cannot quote a paragraph that only makes sense after the two before it.
  • It sits alongside GEO and AIO, and the three overlap far more than the acronyms suggest.

What counts as an answer engine

The category is wider than most people assume, and only part of it is new.

  • Featured snippets, the boxed answer that sometimes appears above the ordinary results, taken directly from a page.
  • People Also Ask, where each expanded question shows a short answer pulled from a page.
  • AI answers at the top of the results, written from several sources at once.
  • Voice assistants, which return one answer because reading ten links aloud is useless.
  • Chat assistants, which answer in prose and cite what they used, and which are the subject of GEO.

The common thread is that the machine has to be able to take a piece of your page out of its context and have it still be true and still make sense.

What AEO changes about how you write

Very little of this is exotic. Most of it is discipline.

  • Answer in the first sentence. Under each heading, state the answer in a short paragraph, then explain. The build-up that reads well in an essay is the exact thing that makes a section unquotable.
  • Write headings as the questions people actually ask. Not “Our process” but “How long does a website take to build”.
  • Make each section stand alone. If a paragraph depends on the one above it, it cannot be extracted without becoming wrong.
  • Be specific. Numbers, durations, conditions, exceptions. Vague prose is never chosen as an answer because there is nothing in it to choose.
  • Use lists and tables where the content is genuinely a set. They are easier to read and much easier to reuse.
  • Say when something depends. An answer that names the condition is more useful than one that pretends there is a single rule.

Structure a machine can read

Formatting is not decoration here. It is how the boundaries of an answer are found.

  • One clear heading hierarchy. One H1, sections under H2, subsections under H3, no skipped levels. This is ordinary on-page SEO and it matters more now than it did.
  • Real lists, marked up as lists rather than as a run of paragraphs that look like one.
  • A short summary near the top, which is often the block that gets used.
  • Structured data, which labels what a block of text is. Useful for telling a machine what it is looking at, and worth keeping in proportion: it describes the page rather than improving it.
  • A page that a crawler can reach and render, which is technical SEO and is still the floor everything else stands on.

The parts that are simply SEO with a new name

A great deal is being sold on the premise that everything changed. Most of it did not.

Answer engines draw on sources they already have reason to consider reliable, and that judgement is built from the same things as before: whether the site is trusted, whether the page is thorough, whether other people reference it, whether the business is real and verifiable. The relationship is looser than in ordinary search, and pages get quoted that are nowhere near the top of the results, but a site with nothing behind it is not going to be picked up instead.

So AEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is a layer on top of it. The genuinely new part is small and specific: the format of the answer, and the fact that being tenth is now much closer to being nowhere.

What you gain by being the answer

The honest accounting includes a loss as well as a gain.

  • Position at the top of the readable part of the page, above the organic results, though on commercial searches the ads are usually above that.
  • Attribution. Most answer surfaces link to what they used, and the name is seen even when the link is not followed. Voice assistants are the exception, since they often give an answer with no visible source at all.
  • Fewer but better visits. People who click after reading a summary have usually clicked because the summary was not enough, which means they want the detail.
  • Authority by association. Being the source repeatedly chosen for questions in your trade does something for brand awareness that an advert does not.

The loss is that some traffic disappears, particularly on questions with simple factual answers. Those visits were rarely going to become customers, but they were being counted, and the reporting will look worse before it looks better.

AEO, GEO and AIO, sorted out

Three acronyms, heavy overlap, no settled definitions. The distinction that holds up in practice is what each one describes.

  • AEO describes the goal: being the answer, on any surface that gives one.
  • GEO describes a subset of those surfaces: systems that generate prose and cite sources, such as chat assistants.
  • AIO most often names one specific thing: Google’s AI Overviews, the summary that appears on the results page.

Anyone insisting these are three separate disciplines with three separate budgets is describing a sales structure rather than the work. The underlying job is one job.

Checking whether it is working

There is no report for this. Search Console counts an appearance inside an answer the same way it counts an ordinary result, and no tool can tell you how often you were considered and passed over.

What is left is looking. Take the ten questions your customers actually ask, run them in a private browser window on a phone, and note whether an answer appears and whether the source is you. Repeat it monthly and keep the notes, because the value is in the change rather than in any single check. The pages that turn out to be quoted are the model for the pages that are not, and that comparison is more useful than any score.

The indirect signals are worth watching alongside it, and AIO covers what those look like in Search Console. Asking new customers what they read before they contacted you is slower than a dashboard and considerably more honest.

What not to do

  • Do not bolt an FAQ onto every page in the hope that the markup does the work. Questions nobody asks, answered by nobody in particular, get ignored.
  • Do not write only summaries. A page of short answers with no depth behind them has nothing for the reader who does click.
  • Do not fabricate specifics to sound quotable. Being cited for something untrue is worse than not being cited.
  • Do not abandon the rest of the site for this. An answer nobody trusts the source of is not chosen at all.

Questions we get

More about aeo

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimisation. The name covers any surface that replies to a question directly instead of returning a list of links, and the work of being the source it uses. Some of those surfaces are new and some, like the featured snippet box, have been around for years.

Is AEO just a new name for SEO?

Largely, yes. Almost everything it asks for was already good practice: answer the question early, structure the page clearly, use headings that match how people ask. What is new is the stake. A page that cannot be extracted from is now often invisible, where before it merely ranked lower.

Does schema markup get me into AI answers?

It helps, and it is not what decides the outcome. Structured data labels what a block of text is, which makes content easier to reuse. Note that Google restricted FAQ rich results in 2023 and retired them from search entirely in May 2026, so that markup no longer changes how you look in Google at all.

What is the point if nobody clicks?

Some searches were never going to produce a click, and being the cited source on those still puts your name in front of the person. The clicks that matter are the ones with intent behind them, and those still happen, because nobody hires a contractor from a summary paragraph.

Does AEO work for local businesses?

Yes, and often faster than it does for anybody else. Local questions are specific, the competing answers are thin, and a business that explains what a service actually involves in its own area is frequently the only page saying anything concrete about it.

How do I know if AEO is working?

Search your own questions and look at whether your page is the one being quoted. Reporting tools cannot separate answer surfaces from ordinary results, so checking by hand is not a shortcut, it is the method. Doing ten searches properly beats a dashboard estimate.

What is the fastest thing to fix?

The opening of each section. Most pages spend two paragraphs approaching the point. Put the direct answer in the first short paragraph under each heading, then explain. That single edit makes a page extractable without changing anything else about it.
